Seattle Raises Minimum Wage, Stands Up for Working Families

Thanks in part to the city’s labor unions and other active residents, the Seattle, Washington, City Council recently and unanimously passed a historic ordinance establishing a $15 minimum wage, now the nation’s highest. The new law will raise wages for an estimated 100,000 workers, providing a $3 billion economic boost for the community. It was made possible thanks to community organizations, student groups and labor unions that spent countless hours educating the public.

This makes Seattle the second city in the state of Washington to successfully raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. SeaTac successfully passed Proposition 1 in October 2013, requiring city hospitality and transportation employers to raise their hourly minimum wage to $15 an hour, adjusted annually for inflation.
